- The storage facility should have a sturdy lock for each of their units, and the service should also offer an option for additional locks (such as cylindrical locks). This makes sense when you have antiques in your unit. It’s also best if the lock features a personal access card so you can have a record of when the locks are opened.
On the other hand, the security should also allow you reasonable access to your unit. That means you should be able to open your unit without having to wait for available personnel to help you out.
- It’s always bothersome when you have to use a storage unit service that doesn’t offer proper supplies. You’ll need to go to a hardware store and get the packing supplies you need. And then you may realize later on that you do not have enough boxes or tape, and so you have to go back to the store to buy some more.
Find out if the self-storage service offers moving supplies on-site. They should offer boxes in different sizes so you don’t have to take up more space than necessary, and the boxes should be strong. The place should also offer additional accessories like tape, rope, scissors, and even packing kits.
- Lease period. The lease should only be for a month with the option to renew for as many months as you need. This is better than being forced into a year-long lease when you only need the place for a couple of months. After all, you may only need it while you’re still in the process of organizing and relocating to your new home.
